Carpet Laying Tips

This is a standard rule of carpet installation.
Carpet laying tips. Do not lay the padding over the tackless strips. This can be newspaper or parcel paper it does not matter. Keep the padding within the inner perimeter formed by the strips. If you floor is concrete or has previously been levelled with a smoothing compound then this can pull up off the floor and may require re smoothing or levelling.
The first rule when laying carpet is to use some double sided tape to hold down sheets of paper to the floor. It s also a great way to reduce draught atop floorboards. Next place the carpet pad within the tack strip layout and then staple it to the subfloor. Lay the carpet correctly.

The bolster chisel will help you attach the carpet on the opposite wall. Loosely lay out the carpet in approximately the correct position. Padding should touch the edge of the tackless strips but should not. This will protect the carpet from any dirt blown up from between the boards and will stop rubber or foam backed carpets sticking to the floor. The pad is easy to trim with a utility knife.
A gap of around 50mm should be left around the perimeter of the room to allow you to stick double sided carpet tape to the floor. Here s a trick worth two of yours.
